PATENTS XII. What Does a Patent Attorney Do?
Some of the functions of a patent attorney are listed below.
A. Definition of Your Invention. A patent attorney analyzes your invention to define key features of the invention that may be patentable. When you look at a cube, you can only see three of the six sides of the cube. A patent attorney tries to visualize the cube, or invention, from all six sides.
B. Search for Language. After a patent attorney defines the key features of the invention, he or she selects the words, or vocabulary, that best defines the invention. Some of the words the patent attorney uses are words not commonly utilized in everyday speech.
C. Interfacing with the Patent Office. The patent attorney is aware of various rules and regulations set forth by the US Patent Office and of how to stay within the metes and bounds of such rules.
